(7,234 posts)If she could afford the $5000 background checks and passed the psych eval and if it was clear case of self defense then obviously a mandatory sentence would not apply.
OTOH if she didn't comply and illegally had the gun in her possession then I have no problem sentencing her to 25 years.
Considering that she indiscriminately fired through a wall instead of at her attacker, I think the current sentence was fair in that context. You cannot go blasting away in a neighborhood then claim self defense although in comparison to what George Zimmerman got which was NOTHING it was a huge miscarriage of justice.
As for George Zimmerman, given that he couldn't become a police officer when he applied, I strongly believe if we had expensive background checks in conjunction with psych evaluations Trayvon would still be alive today because even if he could afford the fee, he probably wouldnt pass the evaluation.
