"between the options the group has already decided" can never be democracy. It's an accepted concession to majoritarian tyranny for reasons I've laid out...but it's in no way democratic or even remotely approaching thereupon. Empathetic social behavior is also impossible if one hews to false dichotomies imposed by partisan ruling classes...it merely makes one the chooser between two puppet-shows both offering the same bread and circuses.
