...which included, if I have my facts straight, confiscating (don't know if it was with compensation) handguns and semiautomatic long guns, mandatory licensing and registration of both guns and their owners, and putting the burden on potential gun owners to prove to the government that they legitimately needed to own a gun prior to getting a license.

The NRA got a ton of publicity simply by showing stacks of confiscated guns being sawed into pieces by workmen with industrial circular saws. I seem to recall when I was much younger NRA-funded infomercials on TV.

Since this legislation hasn't a chance in hell of passing the US Congress, I doubt Obama ordered the 2,400 ATF Special Agents to go confiscate 300 million firearms from some 35 million households spread out among 3.5 million square miles of territory.

it seems... ambitious.
