(9,385 posts)Another good source on the S&L crisis, written in 1984, in real time as it was being discovered by the public. Very specific, and actually very readable. I bought it at the time, when it first came out, and a lot of the details she included never did get noticed by the major news sources. Her book is very good at showing the dozens of close inter-woven relationships between the various principals at different banks. There's no way that all those people (who knew each other) just suddenly spontaneously decided to do the same illegal things at the same time.

Great post, Octafish! The S&L crisis has been largely forgotten. It was the very same play-book as the 2008 crash, except that in the 1980's, the S&L crisis actually got investigated. What a novel and passe idea, right! Back then we used to do archaic things like that... and those Congressional committee hearings would've provided an enlighening and handy road map into investigating the crash of 2008, if anyone had been so inclined. What a waste of priceless experience.
The 2008 crash was a perfect example of the saying, those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.
