6. An interesting story I heard about the origin of the word "soccer"

In the 19th century, there were two games in Great Britain that had "football" in their name. One was "rugby football", the other was "association football". "Association" began to be abbreviated as "assoc." and its players were called "assoc'ers". Because of the inclusion of the "a" at the beginning of "assoc'er", the term had a rather vulgar implication, so eventually it was left off and the name became simply "soccer". However, it was decided that rugby football would just be called "rugby" and "assoc. football" would be called "football" in Great Britain. On the other hand, in the US the Americanized version of rugby became known as "football", while "assoc'er" became "soccer".
