(28,552 posts)..... the average American by a 20 to one margin was against the TARP bailout. When they feel like paying attention they can. They didn't feel like paying attention in this case because a toddler could tell Bush was lying.
In particular the conflation of 911 and Iraq sold the war IMHO. The "average citizen" was basically told in so many words that "we" (govt) "knew" that Saddam was involved but for "classified" reasons we cannot talk about it.
I had a falling out with a neighbor over this very thing. She "knew in her heart" that Saddam was involved in 911. We got into a rather heated exchange and never spoke to each other again.
I think America was angry about 911 and ready to lash out. They don't trust their leaders about anything else, so I'm reluctant to attribute trust as the reason for this lapse.
