(32,886 posts)There are a couple of ways that I have seen folks approach the Rude Pundit's posts
1. He's just too rude/nasty in general for me.
OK, I can appreciate that. He's too much for some folks.
2. I don't like slurs of any kind against anyone, even in someone playing a character.
OK, I understand and can appreciate that too, but I would be curious if someone saying that has ever watched a film or show on Nazi Germany, American History X, or portrayals of the KKK, etc., and found the idea of actors playing those parts acceptable. Or portrayals of serial killers, or various other violent or sociopathic personalities. There is potentially nothing out of bounds for an actor playing a part. It's about accurately depicting the person/subject. In the case of the Rude Pundit, that is a character that Lee Papa plays that has a fairly simple premise. What would a Liberal/Progressive be like if they were as angry, rude and nasty as possible, no aversion to bigoted imagery and had nary a care whether they were offensive. That's the character. Lee Papa does not behave this way.
3. The allegations some have made against Rude Pundit is that he only uses slurs or what many of us agree are biased phrases against women or LGBT. That is clearly not true and I provided a link to prove that. The mere use of any of these words against women, LGBT, African Americans, Latinos or Jews out of character would definitely finish anyone's career on the left and probably finish anyone's career on the right. Now, I am guessing the point you are trying to make is that it's different because although he has used these words in a post, it's not the same because he has not directed those words at Republicans. Well, first off, outside of Clarence Thomas and Allen West, there isn't much opportunity to address Republican African Americans. The same goes for Latino Republicans. There's just not that many of them. Eric Cantor was one of the few Jewish Republicans in office. Not much opportunity there either. But to say that TRP avoids using these phrases like he uses various other offensive ones is just not true. Here is a link to his many uses of the N-word http://goo.gl/VV8Ky1 and here is a link to his uses of the 'K' word for Jews http://goo.gl/91Lfeq
There is no one arguing that these words/phrases/imagery are acceptable in American English. They are COMPLETELY UNacceptable in every instance outside of portraying a character.
I can even accept if the DU community ultimately decides that even after understanding what is going on here, his posts are outside of community standards. I just want to make sure people appreciate the situation.
