(16,487 posts)The guns in civilian hands haven't gotten more powerful since the 1960's. What has made cops start dressing like the SuperSoldats from a Wolfenstein game has been the decision to kick down doors with no-knock warrants, thereby significantly raising the level of potential conflict. As a result, sometimes due to incompetence like raiding the wrong address, innocent people are shot to death and dogs routinely shot, often in the back. At the correct address, the same occurs but also among the fallen have been children shot in the back with a shotgun (while laying on the floor) and a little girl and a baby blown up with flashbangs. Now we the people would like to believe that the District Attorney would hold these reckless negligent public servants accountable, but in nearly every case they are found innocent and the shooting is "justified".
So now you have a police culture where you can just shoot someone, make up any story you want, and never get charged or fired. It's not paranoia - they just have a license to kill.
