(114,904 posts)He can run for the nomination and still be a Senator. Lots have. Anyway, the repub party is a mess in Vermont- to put it kindly. They hold one state wide office. They're in a "super minority" in both houses. They can't find candidates to run and they're broke. When Bernie and Pat retire, there are plenty of very progressive dems and Progressives- Vermont has a viable third party, The Vermont Progressive Party. They work pretty closely with the dems.
