There were viewing parties (LIVE television) for the soccer game all over the US--that wasn't the case with the Olympics. You could watch some live Olympic shit online but NBC was consolidating the stuff and playing it on tape delay for the average schmucks here.
I don't think the comparison is really apt; that said, if I were determined to avoid learning the results of the soccer game, I'd avoid the internet entirely to say nothing of radio and television. Even the wrong sort of home page could give it away. And I'd avoid crowds, too--no going into Starbucks just in case someone was talking about the game results...!
