I have actually driven a Volt, they are very nice hybrids, but too expensive.

I always liked the idea of the series hybrid. Use electric most of the time, and the ICE (a small turbine would be cool) to provide for longer range when needed. But the cost of the Volt is out of the range of feasibility for me.

I always liked the idea of a pure electric, like the Leaf, and a small pull-behind trailer with an engine-generator and gas tank set up providing energy for longer range trips. The trailers could be an option, or perhaps a rental for only when you need one. I've seen the concept fleshed out in prototype once or twice on the 'net, but I haven't run the numbers on energy needed, or cost. One of these days I'll break out the old slipstick and run some numbers.
