(8,554 posts)She was a young vibrant woman; we rushed her to the hospital, sat and held her hand for days, waiting for the lab to return the report of why she was dying. The hospital staff heroically did all that they could, eventually putting her in quarantine, induced coma, fighting blood clots, severe respiratory infections, distressed heart...she was hospitalized for three long months, then moved to a life care facility for six more months.
Now, almost five years later, she is partially immobile, dependent on a wheelchair, her life totally devastated by "the flu".
She'd faithfully gotten her flu shot that year; whenever we see her now, she never fails to bring up the question of why did it happen to her.
I, for one, am glad to see that sharp minds are intent upon discovering how these horrific viruses mutate.
