I was the lead statistician on the tort reform project. I identified information to the actuaries that saved insurance consumers about $500M in premiums. It was one of those oddities where the lowest man on the totem poll had the best grasp of available information that resulted in the largest impact on rate savings. I even helped one of my fellow alums from college save a few hundred dollars when his wife was involved in an auto accident. I haven't been back to the Hobby Lobby in that office building since I left the agency.

When I entered the private sector I had a similar impact making a suggestion regarding language in a reinsurance contract that resulted in tens of millions for that company.

For someone with a degree in math I always thought outside the box. Unfortunately, what I received in salary didn't reflect my contributions to the economy when I worked for the state or to the profit/loss statement when I worked in private industry.
