it is the wild card for the male that stays and invest in a few offspring w one or a small number of women.
to raise another man's child is to lose the evolutionary lottery. to fail at passing on that dna packet.
the rewards for success are large. male involvement was a huge leap for the species.

you may think you have a mind of your own, but it has a mind of IT'S own. and for most human animals, that mind has only one goal, passing on that dna.
