In reply to the discussion: A tip of the hat to DU's The Magistrate. [View all]cprise
(8,445 posts)90. And having 10 screenfuls of it repeated at the start of every thread.
Using Orwell himself to drown out discussion then pontificate about "democracy" is itself Orwellian, esp. from a poster who defended voting for the Iraq War Resolution as a political necessity.
It puts this Magistrate quote in an interesting light:
Orwell dissects quite cogently some long-standing attitudes of the left in the West, attitudes which go a long way towards explaining why left parties remain so impotent in our polity. In a democracy, bearing the 'anti-patriot' label is a heavy disadvantage, and to shoulder it voluntarily, and boast of it shrilly, and rub it in at every opportunity, is simply madness --- if one wants to actually gain mass following for one's social and economic goals....
Remember the media RW refrain about "Blame America First liberals" during the runup to the Iraq War? I do. This is a patently neocon talking point.
