In reply to the discussion: Let's talk about sexism on DU [View all]etherealtruth
(22,165 posts)I am in no way surprised.
Although I recognize that the vast majority of DUers are folk that are disturbed by sexism and wholeheartedly support equal rights for all .... there is a significant and vocal minority of posters that clearly take issue with strong women demanding an equal seat at the table.
Though I am very hesitant to to criticize the admins here (for years DU was a haven for from the idiocy of the right wing and I will always be grateful for their creation!) .... I also understand their thoughts of making DU a more user driven forum (and in many ways appreciate that) ....however (with that said) ....
DU has become a very hostile place for many women to post ... be it the accepted use of the term Radfem (used VERY frequently as a pejorative) ... the inferences that feminists are "man hating" disruptors ... the posters that regularly engage in dismissing or trivializing typical woman's issues ... the attempts to minimize / diminish the horrors of RAPE ... the frequent jury acceptance (remembering that the vocal minority also serves on juries/ and there is also a group that"doesn't want to get involved) of outright misogynistic posts ... there is a very ugly undercurrent here ... and it has been given tacit approval.
That is why your experience mortifies, sickens and disgusts me ... but does not surprise me
