I know many otherwise smart caring people who simply don't believe climate change is happening in any major way, any differently from other times in earth's 6,000 year history.

People are afraid of feeling afraid & helpless, it's easier for them to stay in denial, not understanding the urgency of acting. And as long as there's a chorus of denialists, they feel supported.
