In reply to the discussion: UB paid Hillary Clinton $275,000 for speech last fall [View all]CincyDem
(7,418 posts)26. Supply/Demand - it's just basic economics for the colleges
$275k. Let's see. That's about 4 years tuition for at most 2 kids.
These universities use their speakers list as a marketing tool for prospective students. With 5 kids going through college, we've seen just about every admissions school pitch east of the Mississippi and a fair number west too. In every one, there was some element of crowing about who comes to campus. (note: the most fun was leonard maltin's film class at USC...you NEVER knew who was going to just drop in...and many stars waited in line with the students...but I digress). They range from Condi Rice to Paul Volker to Jeb Bush to Russell Simmons to Cornell West to George Lucas etc etc etc. A litany of names all designed to have you believe that you're kid is going to be exposed to the best and the brightest.
IF, as a result of this marketing message they get just 2 more kids who are paying 100% for their education, then they're money ahead.
They're trying to ramp up demand for their seats.

Hope she didn't use a lot of filler words, like "Um" and "uh" and "you know".

Come on, it's ridiculous that a college is paying that much for anybody to come speak.

Speaking fees. I'm no fan of Hillary Clinton, but if I were a student, I'd be pissed at

I wonder if she donated her speaking fees only as a response the criticism she received.
