FAA Prohibited U.S. Airliners From Flying Where Malaysian Plane Was Reportedly Shot Down [View all]

TOM KLUDT – JULY 17, 2014, 12:55 PM EDT

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a notice several months ago prohibiting U.S.-based airliners from flying in the Ukrainian airspace where a Malaysian passenger plane was reportedly shot down on Thursday.

NBC News aviation correspondent Tom Costello reported on MSNBC that the FAA issued the notice "due to the unilateral action by Russia to assert control over the Crimean air space" earlier this year.

The FAA's notice can be read here.
