because he didn't want to smoke around her or to even have her smell it. It worked for him because he had the willpower and responsibility to gradually reduce the amount of nicotine used. If someone has low willpower, they can easily take too much nicotine too quickly and make their addiction worse.
It really depends on one's mentality.
