The OP is clearly more concerned about "the point where my exploded head bursts into flames of rage" - which was caused by "And it's important for us not to feel too sanctimonious about the tough job that those folks had. Can you really live with yourself, if you rationalize torture away with "fear allowed us to go too far"? Do you truly think "I was frightened" is a suitable excuse for waterboarding, slicing open people's testicles (done for the West by Moroccans), and all the atrocities of Abu Ghraib? And surely you can't think that someone who takes torture more seriously that you is 'sanctimonious'. Or that patriotism is an excuse for torture.

And no, it's not a 'fact' "that fear allowed us to go too far". That's an opinion.
