(8,879 posts)64. On a related note, work to redefine what is a crime and how
we treat criminals in order to get our incarceration rates more in line with the rest of the world. It is criminal that we are locking up between 700 and 750 out of every 100,000 people when our neighbor to the north, Canada, locks up 117 per 100,000. Are Canadians better people than Americans? What else could explain the disparity?
We even dwarf other countries with zero tolerance drug policies.
1 in 10 americans, 31 million people have been arrested for drug related offenses. This is insanity.
We need to figure out a way to allow our people to remain citizens, not turn them into criminals.
