I think, if I can be so bold as to put words in the writer's mouth, that the conventional wisdom about abusers is that it's very often the abused's children and pets that are targets of abuse. Because the abuser is exerting control over the abused, knowing that the abused would submit to the abuser's control/demands to spare the child or pet further harm. That the man would abuse his own pet speaks to an even deeper level of pathology, if such a thing is possible.

That being said, I am not comfortable with that level of editorializing in a "news" story. It is what it is.
