many people use their host files as sort of adblocker/porn blocker/blocking known malicious sites.

when you try to go to an address on the internet if it is in your host files it will resolve to your local machine ip.

and here is an app that makes it super easy and they have a host file with all the ads already in it.
it is freeware and you will probably never need an adblocker if you use it.
