Hillary Clinton called Obama today to let him know she wasn’t trying to ‘attack him’ [View all]

Hillary Clinton made some news on Sunday over an interview she gave that appeared to criticize President Obama‘s foreign policy. But Clinton actually called Obama today to let him know, very specifically, that nothing she said was meant as an attack on him.

Clinton said there was a “failure” to stop jihadists in Syria, and that the Obama administration’s unofficial foreign policy of “don’t do stupid shit” “is not an organizing principle.”

Now, that all sounds like she’s being critical of Obama, but Politico’s Maggie Haberman reports that she meant nothing overtly critical by it. In fact, she had a pleasant phone call with the president to talk it out.

Here’s part of the statement a Clinton spokesman issued on the call:

Earlier today, the secretary called President Obama to make sure he knows that nothing she said was an attempt to attack him, his policies, or his leadership…

Secretary Clinton has at every step of the way touted the significant achievements of his presidency, which she is honored to have been part of as his secretary of state… Some are now choosing to hype those differences but they do not eclipse their broad agreement on most issues.
