3. Southwestern's charter dates back to Rutersville College which was in a town of the same name

in Fayette County and its a few miles north of LaGrange. I've visited the marker and tree on one of my many rolling adventures through Texas. There were four Methodist colleges in Rutersville, Chappell Hill, Clarksville and San Augustine that were consolidated into Southwestern at Georgetown in 1870. The school in Clarksville was also had a slave plantation.
