7. I know at least three Democrats that change to R for primaries

And vote for a Republican candidate likely to disrupt the main candidate. Then they switch back for the main election and vote for the Democratic candidate. That can increase the apparent Republican primary numbers.

Another possibility is that a lot of progressive Democrats will have a hard enough time voting for a DINO like Crist once and don't want to do it twice.
