They see this as the police keeping them safe. They are of the mind of "I have nothing to hide" or "I'm not doing anything wrong" so "what do I have to worry about?". That the police are just there to protect us from the "bad guys".

They change their mind fast when some "informant" gives knowingly bad information, and the police serve a warrant on the bad information. When you have 10 wanna-be soldiers break down your door at 3am kill your pets and send a few of you to the hospital without so much as an apology, or any compensation for the damage, folks tend to see the light pretty quick.
