It would take a miracle to undo the death and destruction we have wrought over these American centuries. And I would be a true believer if a deity appeared and waved His staff or sprinkled His holy water or threw His thunderbolt or unleashed His white doves and replaced the daily carnage with peace everlasting. Amen.

Wouldn’t that be a great gettin’-up day in the morning?

Instead we wake up to the confirmation of the beheading of another journalist by ISIS. The bloody horror in Gaza. The Ukrainian civil war. The domestic problems we experience here, the crumbling infrastructure, predatory capitalism, disappearance of the middle class, the environmental degradation, the lack of educational opportunities, corporate welfare, inadequate health care, out-of-control gun laws, racism, frankenfood . . .

Willie Nelson said it best: “Come on back, Jesus, and pick up John Wayne on the way . . . ‘
