The origin of the phrase is from chicken and animal behavior to maintain power and to cull the weak.
The subject of pecking doesn't always survive it. Some are broken beyond repair. I've seen worse than this, but it is just as horrible.
I'm glad you can't wrap your mind around it. You are a caring human being and would never do this.
Too many make a sport out of doing things like this and worse. And they are never brought to justice. Others are forced to clean up what they did for years, even a lifetime.
People have much less mercy than animals, who maim to practice killing, but that's how they stay alive, their place in life is eating each other alive.
Some members of the human race see Others the same way.
