Sadly, again IMO, President Obama lost so much of his political capital by refusing to prosecute banksters and other elites for the crimes they committed on the vast majority of Americans, not allowing universal healthcare on the table, and many things that most Americans thought they were electing him to do.
Now (and for most of his presidency) the republicans have found their obstructionism (which has hurt 90% of us) tolerated by Americans
because we feel that the status quo trumped the common good, again.
We managed to survive 8 years of a petulant sociopath as POTUS. We watched as our economy was deliberately destroyed from within
(most of our politicians were complicit), our children and many middle eastern people were slaughtered for fun and profit, our economy was governed by those who had destroyed it, austerity for the majority (not the wealthy) was implemented, basically the poor and struggling have been economically devastated, so much more yet no one was prosecuted for war crimes, economic crimes...crimes against humanity are fine if you are wealthy. The political capital which was plenty, turned into a deficit.
Now when common sense proposals (higher minimum wage, etc..) are put forth by our president and are obstructed by mainly republicans, we the people just feel beat. No where to turn because it is unclear who is really on our side.
There are shining exceptions. Senators Warren and Sanders and a hand full of others have led by example and feel as cheated as most of us.
We are gun shy. what will be the next trick visited upon us? IDK the answer but I do believe if those most responsible for crippling America were held accountable (damn, those statute of limitations....) President Obama could possibly regain that capital. As a "lame duck" president it may not matter.
With real leaders like Sanders and Warren a lot of this would be turned around. Working within the confines of a 2 party system it will not happen and I fear that the Stockholm syndrome will play a major role on 2016.
A (at least) viable 3 party system is IMO the only way that progressives can lead America to the paradigm where we actually have public servants working for US.
