I lived in Germany from 76-79 and they thought the same thing. They had an excuse. Since the advent of the internet, they no longer have one. I'm guessing you are one of those Germans I knew but haven't heard of the internet. It's the only reason I can think of for being so ignorant. Fortunately, there's a cure for that. It's called education.
I live in Amarillo, lived in El Paso, Dallas and San Antonio. Yes, some people wear cowboy hats or boots or even western style shirts. Few dress in all of them and fewer dress that way all the time. Now, go to rural Missouri and you'll see the exact same thing but more often.
Full disclosure: I hate Texas and can't wait to escape.
