The United States like many nations has had a longstanding pattern of cherry picking which groups and nation-states get to commit atrocious human rights abuses and which ones dont. Of those one of the most rampant abusers of human life is Saudi Arabia. The U.S government and its citizens are reacting to video of the beheading of journalist Joel Sotloff by ISIS. Yet the U.S government and its citizens seem to largely not care that Saudi Arabia has beheaded 19 people in the month of August. Eight of these beheadings are for non-violent offenses. Seven are for drug smuggling and one is for sorcery....
Any execution is appalling, but executions for crimes such as drug smuggling or sorcery that result in no loss of life are particularly egregious, said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East and North Africa Director in a press release. There is simply no excuse for Saudi Arabias continued use of the death penalty, especially for these types of crimes....
According to the Saudi Press Agency, the Saudi government news agency, on August 18, authorities executed four Saudi men in Najran province. A court had previously convicted the men identified as Hadi al-Mutlaq, Awadh al-Mutlaq, Mufreh al-Yami, and Ali al-Yami of attempting to smuggle hashish into the country.
Hajras in al-Qurey a mentally ill man was sentenced to be publicly beheaded on January 16, 2013. The man allegedly smuggled drugs into Saudi Arabia and attacked a police officer during his and his sons arrest. Al-Qureys son confessed to smuggling drugs, but said his father was unaware of drugs being in the car. Al-Qureys son also said that his father was put into a solitary confinement cell to intimidate him into confessing. He also alleges that his father was beaten which caused him to plead guilty despite originally maintaining his pleas that he is innocent.

The beheaded weren't U.S. citizens. What is difficult about that concept, re: U.S. interests?
