Their experience of occupation and repression by the USSR for 45 years must have left them with an otherwise inexplicable desire to join an alliance that might help to keep history from repeating itself.

You think the U.S. would act any differently? Remember Central America during the 80's?

Reagan was right then and so is Russia now? Or Reagan was wrong then and so is Russia now? It is no wonder that so many fundamentalist and far-right republicans idolize Putin. He's bringing Reagan back to life in a different part of the world.
