Part of it is probably the Very Serious Person disease. If someone's a celebrity, if they're on TV or in print, people see them as being in the inside crowd. And they also want to be part of the "informed" crowd, where everyone knows XYZ. It doesn't matter if XYZ is garbage, if you don't believe it, you're "uninformed". There was a time when you were supposed to think Bush was an honest person, whether you agreed with him or not (and I heard many Democrats say this). Of course, being wrong on a continual basis hasn't stopped people who have the Very Serious Person disease.
It's a similar reason to why people keep on voting for Republicans that continuously screw them over.
