His dad, flawed as he is, nevertheless had principles, and several of those principles made him unacceptable to the great majority of Republicans as a national candidate (or in any capacity that would actually influence actual policy), who nevertheless tolerated his presence in the party solely for the cynical purpose of attracting libertarian votes for their neo-"conservative", authoritarian, anti-civil liberties, and constitution abusing "coalition".

Rand, on the other hand, has on multiple occasions demonstrated that his anti-empire rhetoric is pure window dressing.
