(3,891 posts)Either you don't know what kind of security demands such an honor entail, or you haven't ever endured it. Atlanta has exceedingly busy roads and highways. President Clinton visited more than two times while I was living in Atlanta. The disruption to traffic alone was catastrophic. Shutting down the interstate and the roads from when his convoy was due to travel, until he had actually traveled caused incredible delays and problems that lasted for hours.
It may seem like no big deal to have the road closed for fifteen minutes, or even an hour. But those closures caused accidents further up stream, and traffic jams that lasted for hours later.
Now, lets say you were the manager of the club in question. You have tee times booked weeks in advance for the LABOR DAY HOLIDAY WEEKEND. Remember, it's a holiday weekend. The Country Club is going to be very busy as well with several scheduled events. Less than a week before these things are going to happen, probably no more than a few days, you are called up and asked if you can cancel all of those things, a hundred tee times or so, and a half dozen events at the clubhouse, so President Obama can go around the links.
Honestly, if you say yes, you're going to be fired the next week. Because the people who pay your salary, the club membership, are not going to be happy that they arrive at the clubhouse and find police with the gates closed. Their plans made weeks in advance are going to be completely screwed up. They are not going to be happy, and they are going to demand answers like why did you book them a tee time in July when you knew you couldn't accommodate them? If you manage to keep your job, you will be dealing with complaints for the next several weeks.
Yes, it's an honor to host the President. If the President had asked to golf on a Tuesday, any normal weekday, I'd agree that there was something wrong with them saying no. But remember, it was the LABOR DAY HOLIDAY WEEKEND." Nobody is going to bring everything to a screeching halt to accommodate one guy. I mentioned Disneyland in another response. Seriously, would Disneyland shut everything down for the day to let the President go around the park? The answer is no. It wouldn't matter if the President was one of Roy Disney's Grandkids. They wouldn't do it because it would cause problems for months with people complaining and demanding free days in compensation.
