In reply to the discussion: Re Michael Moore: "Liberals turn on one of their own" [View all]ucrdem
(15,720 posts)44. "We refused to let Detroit go bankrupt" is a reference to Romney's remark.
Which, if you ask me, is where Romney lost the election because when I watched those campaign vids on convention night I saw victory. Brilliant. Anyway yes, "Detroit" in both statements (Romney and Obama's) is a synechdoche for the auto industry, not the city of Detroit, but Moore is definitely talking about the city government. So the error is Moore's, and he knows it, because he immediately hastens to his next point (his letter) as soon as he says it.

Hint: NOT someone who, in the 1980s, would have been considered a moderate Republican.

Moore is saying that a president shouldn't leave the welfare of US cities to their mayors

US presidents do not run US cities. Mayors or city managers do. You're welcome. nt

Conyers is a US Rep. The city of Detroit is in his district. He is elected to represent it.

And I'm not even American. I'm not saying it's your *job* to stand up for Detroit

Yes, but a straw man and the first mention on this thread of Obama being or not being the Mayor

The point of your Reply 45 to me is neither evident nor made and that is the only one I asked about.

Because Moore's claim is that Obama's actions as president won't be memorable

My point is that "he was the first black president" is praise, not criticism

Faulting Moore for not pouring $50 million of his own money into Detroit is silly

Two other factors that differed: a viable 3rd party candidate, and no widepread internet use.

Moore's remark wasn't racist. You are twisting yourself into a pretzel trying to portray it as such

and there's the glitch in your "theory of mind": Moore's attacked for not being behind Obama 100%

Cuz if they turned a critical eye on MM, they'd have to do some introspection, and that's scary.
