Bernie would be a terrific candidate, the problem is the media would spend the whole time not concerning themselves with what Bernie is saying, but with the name "socialist", and inflections of "communism", and though it would be an outright lie, the media would freely exploit it as they did with the "swift boat pukes". Remember, it was bad enough that the swift boat pukes had ads, but the worst thing is the wonder MSM made those ads NEWS, which effectively gave those ads even more exposure, and didn't cost a thing.
Unfortunately, if Bernie ran as a Democrat, and won the nomination, they would do the same thing, and even worse.
I hate to say it, but the elimination of the fairness doctrine, equal time doctrine, and deregulation and mega mergers in the media would be a huge, if not impossible obstacle to overcome.
Bernie would make a truly great president, but the demographic as it exists today has moved far more "joe mccarthy", and right wing since Reagan.
How would Bernie win a red state, or even a purple one in the bible belt. It would be tough, because he would need to get his message out, and I cannot see the media letting that happen, without distortion and lies. Look what they did to Howard Dean. They twisted his enthusiasm in the Iowa primary to paint him as "unstable", and then gave him very little time to respond, but had not problem having his critics respond.
The greatest risk to our Democracy is the lack of a free press, and ironically by the way the media is constructed today, that is effectively what has happened. 90% of the media is right wing. Every outlet cares only for ratings, and uses fox as their emulation
