(2,978 posts)Honestly, I think 1/3 of Republicans need someone to explain to them that a populist fighting for economic justice will do more to promote what they call "traditional family values" than a Mitt Romney or a Libertarian. I think 1/3 of them are "reachable," as well as many lower-info on the fence independents.
Seriously, the golden 50s-60s (while also a result of unprecedented cheap oil and American imperialism) also had labor regs in place that enabled Dad to work and Mom to stay at home and supervise the kids, volunteer, build/maintain community, etc. The patriarchal set up the RW keeps advocating for all of us is now impossible among most classes unless there are living wages for a primary breadwinner. THAT's THE ARGUMENT THAT NEEDS TO BE MADE. Many men erroneously associate the Democratic party with emasculation, even though corporatist policies have done more to erode their traditional economic power than any feminist movement. I don't agree with traditional masculinist norms, but if we can begin to disrupt that structured metaphorical gendering (a la Lakoff) of R-D equals Man-Woman, we can made a lot of headway for the future.
We know (here at DU) that that breadwinner can be a woman (and that both partners can be female, or that there's only one parent, or no children, or whatever), but the whole thing could be framed as a return to the best values of the 1930's-50's. Throw in some feminist homemakers to connect withe the homeschooling, root cellar, canning, gardening Christian Moms and you'll begin to start a grassroots upheaval in the Republican party.
