Zero tolerance [View all]

Subbed today in a ninth grade classroom. Say what you want, but I really enjoy the experience. I rarely have problems in the outstanding district I sub for. But today was a really teachable moment for a remedial math class.

It was a bit rowdy, but I had a handle on it. A rule for me is to not over react. However, I laid the hammer down on a young man who referred to two boys in class as "butt buddies".

I raised my voice and told him and the rest of the class that this was unacceptable. As a teaching moment, I mentioned a cousin I love dearly and several other friends as being gay, and that he, too, probably has acquaintances that are gay as well.

The class then quieted down. I hope it hit a mark. They at least know there's one person out there who won't tolerate such remarks.
