(17,507 posts)..and a supposed inability to bring about real change. And FDR observed that he had to work with the Congress he had, which would not pass anti-lynching legislation. I am relieved that Ken Burns has not shied away from the grimmer aspects of the story. People on all points of the political spectrum have been known to idealize the past, and I find even those from the right wing ready to praise figures safely dead (FDR, Truman, Martin Luther King) while denouncing today's civil rights activists.
So watch the series with your family/friends. Absorb. Discuss. It's inspiring, but at times unsettling as well.
It definitely made me wish I could chat with a totally unguarded FDR -- not that that would have been possible for most people.
