(6,500 posts)Especially for one of the reasons they were put in - store employees in supermarkets and the like that are grabbing a quick snack and soda for a break that can breeze through and go on break rather than stand in line with everyone else.
I only use them when I have a handful of items and don't want to stand in line for awhile behind the carts of dozens of items.
I also use them during the quieter periods when I have my kids as I take the time to instruct them on proper use of such devices since they're common enough in general and the pad features are what you use during a regular check out. Easier to do it when there's nobody in line behind me to take the time to teach them on the function and things to watch out for.
A lot of this thread is like a lot of other threads that go through technology/labor issues. It just boils down to "it's evil/wrong" and has a strong Luddite feeling that's comical. It's like tilting at windmills. Complain online on a forum all you want. But you're better off leaving a customer feedback notice. Or simply leaving a notice saying you aren't coming back to the store at all until they start providing more cashiers.
