(20,370 posts)We all like to imagine that, if only we elected the RIGHT Democrat, we could properly combat climate change. That's it's just a matter of political leanings holding us back.
But at the end of the day, there are many countries around the world that are far more left-leaning than us, yet have also had little success at drastically reducing their carbon emissions, at least to the point that climate science says we must in order to have a snowball's chance in hell of averting catastrophe. Cutting emissions a percentage here or there over a decade are not even close to what we need to keep the polar ice caps, or the coral reefs.
Why? Because we've built a global economy around the idea of continued growth at all costs. Grow or die. And far too many people think that all we have to do is sub in some solar panels and wind turbines for coal-fired plants, drive a hybrid or plug-in, and recycle, and we can then just carry on the status quo with no real pain, no real sacrifice.
Those people are wrong. Real action on climate change requires a MASSIVE decarbonization of our global economy, and such action will have winners and losers. While it will cause some people's fortunes to boom, it will also cause pain to many sectors of the economy and the people employed in those sectors. It MUST be done if we care about our children's and grandchildren's futures, but that translates into potentially many angry voters, something every politician seems to be terrified of because it could cost them their job.
