An upstate New York man who survived six years in concentration camp in Laos was shot dead when a fellow hunter allegedly mistook him for a squirrel, his family said.

The incredible tragedy outside Rochester took the life of 71-year-old father of six, Vienchaleun Kettavong, while he was hunting in the woods behind his Rush home Tuesday evening, the Democrat and Chronicle reported.

The immigrant who fled to the U.S. in 1982 was unexpectedly joined by a friend and his 32-year-old son when authorities say the younger man, Phetsouvahn Kounnavong, fired the fatal blast from his rifle, killing Kettavong at the scene.
