In reply to the discussion: Are the republicans you know generally happy people? [View all]Populist_Prole
(5,364 posts)By "on paper" I mean only in a "look at my big house" or "look at all my stuff" at sense. But they're still fucking miserable.
Some were former working-class democratic voters before they became comfortably retired and cast economic populism aside and let their prejudices guide them. To talk to them, "white flight" was a big part of their life.
Some were just run-of-the-mill republicans who went on a feeding frenzy of sorts once a black man went into the white house. Also aware that most younger than them don't share their view. They don't like it...not one tiny bit.
Some are/were always hard-ass conservatives: They know they lost the culture war. They know the current system is rigged in their favor. They're worried that the proles will get too uppity: Minimum wage increases, ideologically driven foreign policy being questioned, It will never be 1954 again ( except for the 1954 level of workplace unionization or upper income taxation rate ). They wish it was 1899 with I-phone technology.
I concur with so may other posters so far: Of several dozen conservatives I know, all but a couple are perpetually angry and hateful bastards. Can't count their blessings but can only rail against perceived solecisms against them. Absolutely insufferable to be around.
You know what dismays me most? Several are in my family.
