NBC might not want to be "controversial" with the meat 'n' potatoes bunch that still squirms at the notion of LGBT acceptance. The mainstream broadcast networks probably want to "play it safe," and "play it safe" is going to mean straight white guy for at least the next quarter-century. It's the same reason why the over-the-air late night shows and the 6:30 news broadcasts are also helmed by straight white guys. Someone like Rachel would never have a chance on the main network, because you still have to pander to the network affiliates in Dixie, which are probably still airing PTL broadcasts and reruns of "Hee Haw."

I know people personally who no longer watch 60 Minutes simply because Anderson Cooper comes on, and who participated in the boycott of JCPenney because Ellen was their spokesperson. I don't talk to them much, but unfortunately I do know them.
