In reply to the discussion: Mitt Romney files for extension on 2011 taxes [View all]onenote
(46,077 posts)The IRS has changed its rules and only one six-month extension until October 15 (granted automatically) is available. There is no way Romney is going to be in a position, three weeks before election day, of being labelled a tax scofflaw by not filng.
I'm totally not surprised that he asked for an extension. I know he used the automatic extension in 2011, filing on October 15 of that year. I supsect he's done the same thing for many years.
To be honest, he's hardly alone in taking advantage of the automatic extension. There are any number of reasons that folks do that. I've done it for the past several years myself because of various scheduling conflicts.
In Romney's case, my guess is that he'll file sooner than October 15, choosing a moment when the story will most likely be buried -- Labor Day weekend, or some slow time during the summer months.
