(5,400 posts)IIRC, that's part of the rationale about why some kinds of military actions are considered criminal. We broke Iraq, and sent it down a spiral of failure.
Our military presence was both a cause of rebellion, and part of the answer to keeping the country together. Iraq's government made the wrong decisions about how to deal with the vulnerable Sunni minority. Short of treating Iraq like Viet Nam, we had to live with that.
Our drawing our troops out was indeed part of the series of events that led us to where we are today. But they didn't cause it. Had we stayed, we'd be up to our eyeballs in the slaughter on the ground.
I'm still waiting for the neo-con's to prod their kids to enlist. Why aren't they at Harvard and Yale, etc., promoting ROTC? The crap economy their policies left us with can only do so much to help enlistments. To garrison the Middle East we need to see the modern day versions of Cheney not hide behind "better things to do".
Bush needs to be called out on this. "Are you proposing a draft?", "Are you asking the children of your associates and friends to enlist?". If not, where does he see the boots on the ground coming from?
"Are you willing to raise taxes to pay for this, or should it be off budget like your war?"
There are many questions he should be faced with.
