It's designed to sew fear so you only listen to their reporting. And thus only see their sponsor's advertising.

The model was so effective at Fox that many organizations of many different political persuasions are following the same pattern. "You can only trust us, because everyone else is in on the vast conspiracy. Now it's time to be afraid of this new threat from the vast conspiracy. That only we are telling the truth about because everyone else is part of the conspiracy."
